Travel discounts are conditional in ways other categories are not. A hotel code may require a minimum stay length, a prepaid non-refundable rate, or booking within a set window for travel in a later one. The saving can be substantial, but so can the cost of a change of plan.

Prepaid rates versus flexible rates

The deepest hotel discounts are attached to prepaid, non-refundable rates. If your dates are certain, take them. If there is any chance of a change, price the flexible rate as insurance: the difference is often smaller than a single change fee, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before arrival has real value.

Members-only rates are the most consistent discount

Free hotel loyalty programmes routinely publish member rates 5-15% below public pricing, and layer on free in-room wifi and late checkout. Unlike promotional codes, member rates are available year-round and usually still earn points and nights.

Car hire: check what the price excludes

Advertised car-hire rates frequently exclude the second driver, young-driver surcharges, one-way drop-off fees and airport concession recovery charges. Compare the total at the counter, not the daily rate, and check whether your own insurance already covers the excess before buying cover at the desk.

Do hotel discount codes work on peak dates?

Often not. Promotional rates are typically capped by availability and blacked out around major events and public holidays. If a code is rejected, try shifting your arrival by a day before assuming it has expired.

Will a discounted rate still earn points?

Member and advance-purchase rates normally earn points and elite nights. Rates booked through third-party channels usually do not. If status matters to you, book direct.

Are non-refundable bookings ever refundable?

Only in narrow circumstances, and at the property’s discretion. Travel insurance bought before the trip is the reliable protection; requesting a goodwill exception after the fact rarely succeeds.
