Buy out of season
Camping and hiking gear is cleared from September, ski and snow equipment from March, and cycling from late autumn. If you can plan a season ahead, previous-year stock offers the best value in this entire category, because the technical specification rarely changes year to year.
Exclusions are unusually broad here
Sitewide codes in sports retail commonly exclude complete bicycles, electronics, firearms and ammunition, watercraft, and premium technical brands. Read the exclusion list before building a basket, because a single excluded line can invalidate the code for the whole order at some retailers.
Fit matters more than price on footwear and packs
Hiking boots and loaded backpacks are worth buying where you can return them easily. A generous returns policy is worth more than an extra 10% off, because gear that does not fit properly will not get used. Check whether the retailer treats clearance outdoor stock as final sale.

Why are bikes excluded from most codes?
Complete bicycles carry thin margins and manufacturer pricing agreements, so retailers exclude them from sitewide promotions. Discounts on bikes normally come as model-year clearance instead.
Is previous-season outdoor gear a worse product?
Usually not. Year-on-year changes are often limited to colourways and minor trim. Compare the specification sheets: if the fabric, weight and features match, the older model at 40% off is the better buy.
Do codes work during clearance events?
Sometimes an extra percentage applies to already-reduced stock, but more often clearance and codes are mutually exclusive. The offer terms on each page state which applies.
